âHeâs very handsome, isnât he?â she asked as a little goat nibbled Evanâs fingertips.
âThe handsomest goat I have ever seen, Angel.â
âYou pretend to be so dense. You are just like Judith. Of course I did not mean the goat.â
âWho, thenâTerry? I was just thinking that myself. I am veryââ
She gurgled with laughter. âNo, silly, Captain Farlay. I think Judith likes him.â
âWho, the goat?â
âIf you donât stop it this minute, I shall slap you, Evan.â
âThen donât let your personal pronouns dangle so precipitously, my dear. Just say what you mean.â
âJudith likes James Farlay and youâre jealous.â
âI wouldnât be much of a man if I wasnât jealous, but I promise you I do not intend to call him out over it.â
âThat seems very poor spirited of you. You are jealous, but you wonât show it by more than a frown. How far would he have to go before you would call him out?â
âPretty far. Itâs against the rules to be fighting duels. Both the winner and the loser could be court-martialed.â
âReally? So your rank is more important to you thanââ
âCertainly not, but I think you exaggerate the danger of Judith laughing at James Farlayâs jokes. A soldier is bound to pick up a lot of amusing stories. Judith has a lively sense of humor in spite of you all. I see nothing wrong in her enjoying herself.â
âHave you never told her any of your amusing stories?â
âNot more than one, and you remember how that went down. Also, she says she will never marry. That doesnât just apply to me, I take it?â
âNo, she means it. Seems an absolute waste to me.â
âYes, try as I might I cannot see her as a nun.â
âAs a what?â
âAs a nun, in a convent.â
âWhat absurdity is this?â
âFor some reason she has decided to convert and go into religious life. I suppose it is the kind of callingââ
Evanâs musings were interrupted by Angelâs peal of laughter.
âWhat is so funny? I think itâs a damned waste, too.â
âSheâs having you on,â Angel gasped. âJudith has the drollest sense of humor. She has me going all the time. You couldnât possibly have fallen for that or you are not as smart as Terry. I promise you he would never have believed it.â
âIt wasnât she who told it to me, but Helen,â Evan said with some heat. He was not at all used to being laughed at by Angel.
âWell, if it comes to that, who do you think Judith learned such joking from?â the girl asked, drawing her shawl up over her head and putting on a somber face. When she got to the point of pressing her hands together, Evan lunged after her with an oath. For the moment she was much faster than he was, but it did not make a good impression on anyone that he was caught chasing her back to the yard, with her screaming gleefully. They all glared at him, except Sylvia, who looked speculative, and her cousin, who grinned at him.
James rose and came over to him with a glass and an open bottle of wine.
